Black Diamond was a massive North American Bison, whose infamy remains over a century after its death. Black Diamond was a buffalo homed by the Central Park Zoo, and in 1911 American sculptor James Earle Fraser used the stunning animal image as the base for the 1913 nickel coin. Despite the massive popularity of Black Diamond, when the animal was put up for auction in 1915, it did not receive a single bid. A private sale later saw it sold for $300 where it was quickly slaughtered. The 750lbs of useable meat from the animal were made into “Black Diamond steaks” and sold for $2/pound.
